Mossel Bay at a glance

Mossel Bay, with its Instagrammable views, small-town ambience and plethora of things to do, is often described as the Adventure Capital of the Garden Route. It has also been named by the Guinness Book of World Records as having the second mildest all-year-round climate in the world - and that's just one of the great reasons to call Mossel Bay your home.

Getting to know Mossel Bay better

Mossel Bay is a town steeped in history and perhaps the best example of its historical sites is the Post Office Tree, where seafarers en route to the far east would leave their letters destined for home in a shoe or iron pot, to be collected by sailors travelling the other way on their way back home to Portugal. If you visit the Dias Memorial Museum, you'll be in the exact spot where the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed in 1488, effectively discovering a feasible route to India around the Cape.

Mossel Bay is situated on the Garden Route, close to some of South Africa's best-loved sightseeing destinations. It is served by George Airport, which is approximately a half-hour drive from Mossel Bay.

As previously mentioned, Mossel Bay is renowned for its temperate weather. Residents enjoy warm summer days in which the mercury typically rises into the high 20s or low 30s and mild winters which typically see maximum temperatures in the high teens or low 20s.

Mossel Bay is also well known for its sophisticated residential developments. To provide just a few examples, Hartland Lifestyle Estate, Outeniquasbosch Wildlife Village and Rheebok Village Estate give Mossel Bay residents access to an outstanding way of life.

Schools, medical facilities and shopping centres

There are plenty of opportunities for children in Mossel Bay to get the best possible start to life. Primary schools in the area include Milkwood Primary School, Garden Route Primary School, Hartenbos Primary School and Park Primary School, amongst various others. When it's time for high school, your teen can continue their education at schools like Point High School and Curro Mossel Bay High School.

There are two private hospitals in Mossel Bay. Life Bay View Private Hospital and Vidamed Private Hospital are both highly regarded medical centres. You'll also find an array of doctors, dentists, physiotherapists and other medical professionals in Mossel Bay.

When it comes to shopping, Mossel Bay has your needs covered. Heiderand Mall boasts a wide array of shops from department stores and fashion to electronics, home décor and everything in between. The centre offers 24-hour security and plenty of parking. Langeberg Mall offers another great destination for both retail therapy and the necessities.

Restaurants, special attractions and things to do

Mossel Bay is not known as the Adventure Capital of the Garden Route for nothing, and those looking for an adrenaline rush will not be disappointed. You can go canoeing, canyoning, kayaking or quadbiking - among various other thrill-inducing activities. One of the perennial local favourites is ziplining at Mossel Bay Zipline, which is the longest over-the-ocean zipline in the world.

One of the things Mossel Bay's residents love most about their home is the sheer variety of things to do. There are museums, beaches, a lighthouse complex, hiking trails and even an artisanal brewery to explore. At the Dias Museum complex, you'll be able to see the famous 500-year-old Post Office Tree, as well as a life-size replica of the Dias Caravel and an aquarium. Climb to the top of the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse for stunning panoramic views of Mossel Bay or enjoy the sea breeze on the Saint Blaize Hiking Trail.
