Wilderness property: A profile of Wilderness property from a prospective buyer’s perspective, with information on facilities and attractions.

Wilderness Property

The tranquil resort town of Wilderness is one of many popular holiday destinations that lie along the Garden Route. Nestling between the lush, forested slopes of the Outeniqua Mountains and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean, Wilderness is characterised by a long, sandy beach and is bordered by rivers, estuaries and nature reserves.

A varied assortment of Wilderness real estate is available, providing outstanding investment opportunities for all budgets. As a traditional vacation destination attracting both local and foreign tourists, Wilderness property typically provides a steady rental income stream throughout most of the year.

Property developers can choose between large acreages that lie along the spectacular coastline or within the protected confines of the afromontane forest. Top end buyers will undoubtedly be interested in a selection of lavish Wilderness properties that include sea-side villas, luxurious holiday homes with river frontages in trendy lifestyle estates, and well-equipped smallholdings.

Affordable, established family homes and modern apartments located in secure gated communities provide cost effective alternatives for entry level buyers, while plots of land close to the town itself are regularly on the market.

Wilderness Attractions

Wilderness property owners are surrounded by some of the most rugged and beautiful scenery in the country. A number of natural havens – Lakes Area National Park, Goukamma Nature Reserve and Garden Route Nature Reserve – offer a variety of adventure activities including hiking, horse riding, canoeing, bird, whale and dolphin watching.

Abseiling 45m down the Kaaimans River Gorge in the mist of a powerful waterfall is an unforgettable experience, while ‘The Map of Africa’ and ‘Dolphin’s Point’ are popular view sites. The 800 year old Woodville Big Tree, a 31m high Outeniqua Yellowwood located off the old George to Knysna road, is an ideal picnic spot.

Wilderness Facilities

Although Wilderness is a tiny resort community, it is well serviced by facilities and amenities. A number of Afrikaans and English medium schools including Hoekwil Laerskool, Oakhurst EK Primary, Rosemoor Primary and St Mary’s Laerskool are located in or around the area, while higher education institutions can be found in the neighbouring town of George.

Safety and security are provided by the Conville Police Station and a number of shopping malls supply retail necessities. The George Mediclinic and George Hospital offer quality private and public health care respectively.
