Getting your home ready to entertain during the Rugby World Cup
Category News
We're in for a nail-biting time ahead as the Springboks attempt to bring home the Webb-Ellis trophy for the fourth time and the second time in a row. Before the first penalty is scored and the first try converted, you need to have your home (and particularly your entertainment area) ready to say "Gaan die Bokke"! Jawitz Properties has put together our own 'green and gold, proudly South African' checklist for getting your home ready to host family and friends for the game.
Step one: getting your entertainment area ready
Before you can start celebrating Springbok victories, it's time to do a spring clean of your entertainment area and lounge or home theatre room. Starting with your outdoor entertainment area, use a high-pressure hose to clean the surface of your patio, paying extra attention to corners and crevices. Clean your outdoor furniture and give your braai a thorough scrub to remove any grime that has built up. Trim back any overgrown plants, bushes and trees around the patio, taking care to remove dead or damaged branches. Finally, add a little ambience to your outdoor setup with solar or battery-powered fairy lights.
Moving inside to where the game will be watched, rearrange your furniture if necessary to make sure that everyone will have a great view of the game. Make sure your remote-control batteries have been recently replaced and that all your devices and fibre connections are working properly.
Create a festive atmosphere
Green and gold are the colours of the day and your entertainment area and home theatre or living room can be festooned with Bok memorabilia and motifs to mark the occasion. If you're keen to go all out, include South African flags and create a rugby-themed photobooth, complete with a rugby ball, Bok regalia and rugby jerseys to be donned for selfies and photos of the occasion.
Prepare rugby-related entertainment
To make the occasion truly memorable, prepare some themed games to play before the game and during half time. You can put together a quiz on the participating teams or test your guests to see how good their memories of our 1995, 2007 and 2019 victories are. You can also create a friendly betting pool, with friends and family members wagering on the results of each game.
Plan a special menu
If you're having your guests around for a meal as well as the game or simply want to make the most of this World Cup rugby experience, consider getting into the spirit of the event by serving something from the nation that the Boks happen to be taking on that day. For example, when South Africa takes on Ireland, you could serve Irish stew or shepherd's pie. The other way to approach this is to serve South African cuisine - and of course, the best way to do that is with South Africa's favourite tradition - a braai.
Remember to keep the snacks coming and the drinks cold during the game. Biltong, droewors and Mrs Balls Chutney-flavoured chips are the way to go - and you can't beat milk tart for a South African dessert.
Keep a pile of blankets at the ready
Remember that the RWC matches take place later on in the day and evening, so whilst the tension may heat up, the temperature may not.
Depending on where in South Africa you are, September can still be a fairly chilly month, so hosting friends for the World Cup can be a great excuse to showcase your winter scatter cushions, throws and blankets. Also, if you have a spare bedroom, make sure it's ready and waiting for guests in case anyone needs to sleep over after celebrations and victories.
