Top four home trends that have taken centre stage in 2024

Category News

As we approach the end of 2024, and among various home trends that have become prominent this year, Jawitz Properties would like to shine the spotlight on four that should not be ignored. Blurring lines between interiors and exteriors, tech integration, a new take on minimalism and an increased focus on sustainability have been on everyone's agenda in 2024 and beyond.

Lines are being blurred between interiors and exteriors

Gone are the days of homes and gardens being considered separate spaces. The outside is being brought in through the use of natural textiles, open spaces and natural light. At the same time, the interiors are being brought outside, with outdoor kitchens becoming much more than braai areas and patios having new life breathed into them as valued entertainment spaces.

Outdoor kitchen designs are incorporating eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient appliances. They are being mindfully designed as multifunctional spaces that can be used for dining, entertaining and relaxing. Looking at global trends, we're seeing biophilic design elements like wooden accents, natural stone countertops and plant integration become focal points in outdoor kitchens. In an era of increased focus on health and wellbeing, the importance of outdoor living spaces and indoor/outdoor flow are paramount.

Using tech integration to create smart homes

Recent advancements in smart home tech have changed the way people live forever. For example, advanced customisation and control features have ushered in an era of voice activation. Voice-activated doors, thermostats, security systems and lighting setups are just a few of the ways that artificial intelligence is transforming homes, especially in luxury properties. This creates a wealth of possibilities, allowing more people to age in the comfort of their homes and bringing convenience closer to home for everybody.

Tech integration also brings advances in home security, with encryption protocols, enhanced cybersecurity measures and biometric authentication now possible. By integrating your home security systems with increasingly slick mobile apps, you can access it from anywhere, monitoring your property and adjusting settings as required.

Warm minimalism and quiet luxury

Minimalism, with its clean lines and simplicity, has been trending in recent years. A new trend that has emerged in 2024 - warm minimalism - combines the clean lines and simplicity of minimalist design with cosy and inviting elements like warm textures, colours and materials. It's about combining the best of both worlds: uncluttered serenity and warm welcomes. The look is usually created with the use of natural materials like wood, stone and bamboo, with warm tones like beige, soft grey and other earthy hues rounding off the ambience.

Quiet luxury is another trend that focuses on clean lines and uncluttered spaces. It refers to sophisticated décor in which high-quality materials maintain a subtle, understated aesthetic. Natural materials like marble and granite are being chosen for their quality and timeless appeal rather than any flashiness.

Minimising environmental impact and maximising sustainability

The wellbeing of both people and the planet has continued to be at the top of the agenda in 2024. This dual concern is driving homeowners to all things renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. Reclaimed wood, bamboo, organic textiles and environmentally friendly paints are finding their way into an ever-increasing number of homes. When looking to buy things - from food to furniture and everything in between - homeowners are increasingly supporting ethical and local artisans. At the same time, people are reducing their homes' carbon footprint by using energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting and solar panels wherever possible.

Water scarcity also remains top of mind this year, as people look for ways to conserve this precious resource. Reusing greywater, which is water produced from daily household activities such as bathing, washing hands and laundry, has become a priority. Besides adopting eco-conscious habits, people are also embracing rainwater harvesting and water storage tanks and investing in water-efficient appliances.

Trends come and go, but the commitment to sustainability and prevalence of tech integration will certainly continue to become more prevalent in our lives - just like Jawitz Properties will continue to provide outstanding service to South Africans looking to buy, sell or rent property.
